Piqued by the CPM’s intention to get him resign the post of Speaker in order that the party will have one more MP’s vote on its side in the parliament during the trust vote, Somnath Chatterjee has threatened to quit both as Speaker of the Lok Sabha and MP.
With Chatterjee refusing to step down as Speaker, the Left parties later decided to avoid a split in the Left votes in the parliament and have now chosen to leave it to him to decide.
The Commuinist Party of India - Marxist (CPM) has now softened its stand and the party General Secretary Prakash Karat has said, “We do not want the office of the Speaker dragged into any unnecessary controversy.” Karat further clarified that he had already stated, “Any decision will be taken by the Speaker himself.”
Chatterjee was elected to the office of the Speaker not as a candidate of any one party but on a unanimous note by the Lok Sabha MPs.
Somnath Chatterjee is expected to play a pivotal role during the debate on the Indo-US Nuclear Deal and the subsequent trust vote in the Lok Sabha on July 22, 2008.
