Somnath Chatterjee has put down his foot on his party’s demand that he quit the post of Speaker before the trust vote. Chatterjee knows the importance of Speaker’s role on such occasions in the parliamemnt and it seems that he wishes his experience is put to good use during the impending trust vote in the Lok Sabha, the lower house of Indian parliament.

Chatterjee has maintained that the post of the Speaker is apolitical and it is a constitutional position. But, the Communist Party of India - Marxist (CPM) is in need of mustering the support of sufficient number of MPs to vote against the government and Somnath Chatterjee, who was elected to the parliament on a CPM ticket, can vote only if he resigns from the post of Lok Sabha Speaker.

Chatterjee appears to be the man best suited for the job of controlling the unruly MPs during a debate of paramount importance. He is respected by MPs and leaders cutting across party lines.

In a related development within the Left parties, West Bengal Minister for Sports and Youth Affairs Subhas Chakraborty has said that Somnath Chatterjee should not quit as Speaker before the trust vote in Parliament.

Congress, the largest single party in the parliament, has also expressed its support for Somnath Chatterjee’s continuation as Speaker of Lok Sabha.

It is no longer pertinent whether Somnath Chattarjee was elected to Parliament on a CPM ticket or a Congress ticket. The moment he was elected Speaker of the Lok Sabha he has risen above his political affiliations.

It is quite right that the Speaker maintains the stand that the Speaker of the Lok Sabha is a constitutional authority and that the Speaker is apolitical. This is implicit, and for the benefit of those who choose not to understand the Speaker has explicitly stated it so many times.

Either out of such narrow considerations of getting another vote or for any other reason, if the CPM or their coalition parties pressurize the Speaker to resign, it would be unfortunate.
