Sam Manekshaw, indeed was a man of rare integrity.
A professional solider, who did not fear anybody.
During the growing up years, post the emergency days (if I remember correctly), there was a rumored fear that Sam could be India’s first Military Dictator.
The Gentlemen solider that he remained never let such ambitions cross the threshold of democratic norms.
It was people like Manekshaw that made the difference in evolution of India and Pakistan as nations.

Manekshaw shot to fame immediately after the opening and after the quick victory of the war. He became so popular that every child in the country knew his name and every boy wanted to become a soldier.

My memory got me wrong. Manekshaw retired in 1973, so the ’rumoured fear’ must have been a few years earlier.

True. In fact, many people eagerly wanted him to take over the government as a military dictator and weed out corruption and malpractices.

To the people of India, I want to say that I am very sorry for your lost. Although I did not know this man but from what I read he was a great man who will rest in peace, assuredly.

Truly great soldier and a great humanitarian. He was not only a highly decorated soldier, but an iconic leader too. One of the jewels of India.
I have had the privilege of seeing him as a child in Bangalore during the late 80s.
May his soul rest in piece.
